Skara Brae Homestead

Skara Brae was born from the desire to grow affordable, all natural food.  It is an extension of the Butcher-Howell homestead where they have begun growing a portion of their own food and operating Wings of Joy Butterfly Farm.  For the last five years, Sarah and Stephen have been producing a variety of herbs, vegetables, and fruits.  In March of 2007, they started adding livestock.

The original homestead was started in Aldie, Loudoun County, Virginia and in 2009, it was moved to its current location.  Both Sarah's and Stephen's family have a long tradition of farming.  They are continuing with this tradition, but adding a new twist.

Skara Brae

The homestead takes it name from a Neolithic farm site in Scotland named Skara Brae.   We chose this since the Village of Aldie, where our homestead started, was named after it's founder's home castle in Scotland.  Plus, both Sarah and Stephen have Scottish heritage.  Like the historical site in Scotland that is preserving a bit of agricultural history, our Skara Brae is preserving and promoting agricultural history by specializing in heritage breed livestock and heirloom produce.
