Free Range Eggs

Chickens scratching in a yard and fresh eggs are one of the first things people think of when envisioning a homestead.  Skara Brae's eggs will be sure not to disappoint.  You will instantly see a difference between a farm fresh egg and a store bought egg.  Not only will the colors vary, but the appearance and taste will differ.

Availability?

We will have eggs available starting in the 2010 season.

How?

Skara Brae free ranges all of our poultry and fowl flocks which means they are free to wander our fields in search of their feed.  They eat a diet of fresh greens and bugs which give the egg yolks a dark orange color.  They are supplemented with local grown feed.  They are never given hormones or antibiotics.

Customers may ask why our eggs are more expensive than those in the grocery store.  The answer is simple - our poultry are not part of a factory farm and thus cost more to produce.

Notice how store bought eggs are all similar in shape, size, and color.  They appear to have come off an assembly line.  That is close to the truth.  Factory farm chickens are confined to cages with a footprint approximately the size of a sheet of paper.  Their soul purpose is to produce as many eggs as possible within a year.

Our eggs are the freshest possible since they are produced on the farm and sold immediately without sitting on a shelf.  Grocery store eggs can be on a shelf for a month.

Why?

Our flock consists of numerous heritage breed poultry thus resulting in a variety of eggs. You will notice different sizes, shapes, and colors.  We raise heritage poultry for they are good free rangers - working to find their own food and doing well with this type of raising.
