Heirloom Produce

Availability?

We will have produce available starting in the fall of 2010.

How?

Our produce is grown using all natural methods.  We utilize raised beds and a no-till method in order to prevent soil disturbance and erosion.  We fertilize with compost produced on our farm and mulch in order to save water.  We also make our livestock work for their keep by using them for pest control, fertilizing, weeding, tilling, and clean-up.

When purchasing our produce, you may notice blemishes.  Please don't be alarmed.  This is what happens when growing "real" produce.  We have a saying: "If the bugs won't eat it, why would you?"

Why?

We have chosen to grow heirloom produce not only for their flavor, diversity of size, shape, and color, but also to preserve parts of our agricultural history.  Plus, these are plants that have adapted to best handle the local climate, pests, and diseases thus allowing us to use green practices to maintain our gardens.

In order for our produce to be called heirloom, it must meet three criteria:

1.  The plant must have been introduced at least 50-100 years ago.  The seeds of these plants have in many cases traveled with immigrants to new countries.  They have been handed down from generation to generation within a family or community.

2.  It must be open-pollinated.

3.  Heirloom produce are known for the quality of flavor.
