First, we would like to welcome everyone to our blog and Skara Brae Homestead where we are more than a farm, but a lifestyle. Our hope is to invoke thought and collaboration by creating a dialog.

We thought this was the perfect title to launch our first entry. Due to someone living beyond their means, we were able to purchase an amazing foreclosed farm. Due to our frugality, thinking outside the box, and hard work; we are able to live a life that should be beyond our means. Let me explain.

Whether it be in the news or over the picket fence gossiping with your neighbor, there are numerous stories of people coming upon hard times these days. Hard times call for difficulty decisions. Unfortunately, many either do not have the ability or are not willing to do this.

Our homestead is named after Skara Brae, a Neolithic farming village on the Orkney Islands in Scotland. This community was carved out of the harsh seaside conditions in Northern Scotland. They thrived by working as a community and not by depending on a centralized government to “meet” their needs. This is our goal.

We have made tough decisions in order to work towards self sufficiency and be prepared for emergencies. At the same time, we have been able to enjoy life while still living within our means. We strive to produce 85% of our food. We conserve energy and utilize passive solar and wood to heat our home. We freecycle and shop second-hand stores. Instead of hiring out jobs, we are renovating and maintaining the farm ourselves. These are just a few examples of our money saving measures.

These measures allow us to budget for items that would otherwise be beyond our means – nights out, traveling, certain finishes in our home are just a few examples.

We have developed waterproof skin in order to shed the critiques of those who don’t understand. They are still living with in the confines mainstream society. They seem to think we deserve pity or have lost our minds. It doesn’t bother us for we are prepared for what life may throw at us and are enjoying almost every moment along the way. We are proud to be different.

If you wish to learn more about our homestead and lifestyle – how to give the appearance of living beyond your means, please visit our blog each week. You will quickly see how every aspect of our lives intertwines to form the big picture. Please comment. Add your opinions. It is the only way everyone can learn together.
